Singapore Β· Merchant fees (MDR)

What each payment rail actually costs the till

Nine ways a small Singapore restaurant can take money β€” direct bank PayNow, GrabPay, DBS MAX, ShopBack Pay, HitPay, KPay, 2C2P, Stripe and Airwallex β€” compared across PayNow, DBS PayLah!, Mastercard and Visa, at the S$15–30 tickets a neighbourhood restaurant actually rings up.

Rates checked 20 Oct 2026 All figures SGD Per-transaction MDR unless noted

The bottom line

  1. Direct bank PayNow is effectively free β€” the nominal S$0.20 per transaction is waived at DBS, OCBC and UOB. The trade-off: money lands instantly in the bank account, but nothing matches it to an order automatically. Staff confirm payment by eye (bank app / IDEAL alert) before the order fires.
  2. DBS MAX is the cheapest published upgrade for DBS account holders: PayNow QR at 0.25%, tap-to-pay cards at 2.50%, with a 6-month PayNow fee waiver for new app sign-ups.
  3. HitPay is the cheapest aggregator with published rates β€” PayNow 0.4% in person, cards 2.5% + S$0.50 in person β€” and it adds the real-time webhooks bank PayNow lacks. Stripe and Airwallex charge 1.3% and ~1% for PayNow respectively.
  4. 2C2P, KPay and ShopBack Pay (direct) publish no rates at all β€” every figure there is a quote you have to request. Grab accepts PayNow in-store via the GrabMerchant app, but its QR rate is likewise unpublished.

Cost per transaction, at your ticket size

Percent-only fees look tiny until a fixed S$0.50 lands on a S$20 bill β€” that's 2.5% before the percentage even starts. Drag the ticket size and see what each published rate really takes, per transaction and across a month.

The full matrix

Published per-transaction fees by provider and method, plus whether a payment can confirm itself to an order system in real time. β€œQuote” means the provider publishes no rate card β€” the number only exists in a sales conversation. A customer paying with PayLah! at a physical QR code is on the PayNow rail regardless of provider β€” DBS states this outright β€” so counter PayLah! costs whatever that QR's PayNow rate is.

Provider by provider

The fees are only half the decision β€” setup cost, when the money actually arrives, and whether a paid PayNow can confirm an order automatically matter just as much at the counter. Tap a provider for the full picture.

Bank PayNow via SGQR
Setup / monthly
Free. PayNow Corporate registration and QR generation through your banking portal (e.g. DBS IDEAL); no monthly fee for basic PayNow Corporate.
Settlement
Instant β€” bank-to-bank over FAST, 24/7, straight into your account. No payout wait, no middleman holding funds.
Real-time order confirmation
No automatic matching. You get push/app notifications and IDEAL credit alerts with payer name and reference in real time, but nothing ties a payment to a specific order β€” staff check and confirm manually. API callbacks exist via bank developer APIs (e.g. DBS RAPID) if you build the integration. Note: merchants are prohibited from surcharging customers for PayNow (ABS FAQ, Jun 2026).

GrabPay / Grab for Business
Setup / monthly
In-store activation fee S$100/outlet (your own Android device) or S$300/outlet (Grab Order Device), before GST, since 1 Jan 2024 β€” offset against future earnings.
Settlement
Online payments settle end of each working day. In-store card and QR payments settle the next calendar day.
PayNow acceptance
Supported in-store β€” the GrabMerchant app's merchant QR accepts GrabPay, PayNow and Alipay+, alongside Mastercard and Visa card payments. The in-store QR MDR (PayNow included) is not published β€” quote-based.
Real-time order confirmation
Merchant app notifications in real time; webhooks available on the online API integration.
Not published
The in-store β€œPay via QR” MDR is account-based and not published β€” third-party figures floating around (1–1.5%) are old and low-quality; request a direct quote. (GrabFood's 30% is a delivery commission, not a payment fee.)

ShopBack Pay (direct)
Pricing
Not published β€” quote-based. Its settlement reports stack three charges: an MDR fee, a loyalty fee, and cashback payable β€” so the true cost is more than a single headline rate. ShopBack holds a MAS Major Payment Institution licence; 20,000+ physical SG outlets.
Settlement
Daily, T0+1.
Real-time order confirmation
ShopBack partner API and webhooks are available to direct merchants. Via HitPay instead, confirmation runs through HitPay's webhooks.

Real-time order confirmation
Yes β€” webhooks fire on payment_intent.succeeded. GrabPay is supported but its rate is not published.
Caveat
The ~1% PayNow figure comes from a Xendit comparison (Sep 2026), not from Airwallex's own fee schedule β€” treat it as indicative until quoted.

Still unknown β€” needs a direct quote

  • GrabPay in-store QR MDR β€” not published by Grab; ask for the account rate before signing.
  • 2C2P and KPay, all methods β€” no public rate cards exist; both are quote-based.
  • ShopBack Pay direct MDR β€” the MDR + loyalty + cashback stack is only visible in a merchant agreement.
  • Airwallex PayNow (~1%) and DBS MAX's PayLah! Express / non-contactless card rates β€” not published by the providers themselves.
  • Bank PayNow waiver end-dates β€” incoming PayNow is effectively free at the major banks as of Oct 2026, but promo windows shift often; check your own bank's current pricing guide.
